Overview: Virginia-based alternative hip-hop duo The Youth released their debut album B.A.S.E on September 11, 2010. This is an independent release under their own production company, Voir Dire Enlightenment Project. Carter and Taylor Whitelow, both finance majors at VCU, touch a wide array of topics including drug and alcohol addition, depression, finance, political commentary, and love. The brothers were born in Richmond, Virginia, and are classically trained in several disciplines of music. Their love of Hip-Hop and Urban music was developed in the late ‘90’s and ‘00’s, when they listened and emulated such acts as The Roots, Jay-Z, Nas, Tupac, Radiohead, 311, and Incubus. This eclectic blend of music is evident in the alternative nature of their latest project. The wide range of social commentary is a shift in focus from the normal, mainstream hip hop subject matter.
