August Ruins formed completely randomly and I guess kind of by fate when drummer Kory Caldarelli’s post rock band called The Great White Chaotic split up and Kory was left looking for a band. Lead guitarist Eric Sebula also had a hardcore band at the time called Words Not Spoken, which was also going through line-up changes, and they needed a drummer to keep themselves rolling. Ironically Kory and Eric met through craigslist ads, Kory posts looking for a band and Eric posts that his band is searching for a drummer. Kory got the spot without question working extremely well with Eric from the first 15 seconds they’d played together. Even more ironic, the 2 of them grew up in the same neighborhood as kids and just never knew one another due to age differences, and met each other through music as adults. Soon Words Not Spoken dropped the old frontman, changed the name to August Ruins and rewrote the music. August Ruins has emerged from the Steel City underground armed with motivation, a message, and a melody. Founded in May of 2009 August Ruins has found success with an explosive sound, combining the speed and melody of California punk with the technicality of modern metal.
The four: Butch (bass &vocals), Eric (lead guitar), Kory (drums), and Reggie (rhythm guitar) took it as a new beginning, and have found the ability to compromise, collaborate and respect each others own musical backgrounds. With a different sound they released a debut self-titled demo in December of 2009, under the name Sleeping with a Bullet. It turned out well, but the band new the sound could be much better and more refined. After only a few short months they decided to travel to Long Island, New York to record their first EP with producer Anthony Santo at Killingsworth Recording Company , and in August of 2010 released, "The Ghost and the Gasoline." The name August Ruins was set on the way home from New York, because the month August one year earlier Words Not Spoken began its demise, and now in August a year later the group has begun their blastoff into the music industry.
As a band we have won several Battles of the Bands competitions: 1st place at Gorilla Productions Battle, completed 4 rounds in Pittsburgh’s a Fight for Fame Competition making it to the final 6 bands, 1st place at the University of Pittsburgh’s Battle of the Bands. We have played benefit shows for a friend who has cancer and rose over $1000 for him. Beside those we’ve played tons of shows to just let loose and have fun at bars and clubs with friends in other local bands. These always turn out to be a great time with awesome audiences, drinks and cocktails, girls, friends, and an awesome atmosphere.
We have played with many great acts some local and some national, and want to thank each every one of them for their hard work and support and all the great music you have put on this world.
