I Will Never Be the Same

Overview: With over 10 years of producing music, Josh Atchley decided he wanted to create his own project that he could play live shows with. Written/Recorded/Played/Produced by Josh Atchley in his apartment. I Will Never Be The Same mixes hard-edged melodic rock with pulsing ambient and industrial chords. Lighting up the stage at packed Viper Room shows in Los Angeles and securing a spot on Dave Navarro's "Dark Matter" radio show, the band built their debut album Standby as a solo affair, but transformed it into a captivating live spectacle. In the vein of 30 Seconds to Mars meets Nine Inch Nails.

"After a year and a half of writing and experimenting, the end result was IWNBTS," says Josh Atchley, the sole creator of Standby. But, he continues, "I was looking at these songs from a live standpoint the moment I started writing them." And it shows. I Will Never Be The Same brings confidence and dead-on precision to their live shows. Atchley - who's been writing, producing, and remixing for the past 10 years - brought in veteran West Indian Girl bassist Francis Ten, guitarist Taylor Haycraft and keyboardist Brittany Bao to realize the live sound. Their live performances at LA venues including The Viper Room, The Dakota Live Music Lounge, The Roxy and Spaceland have received glowing praise from critics.

IWNBTS has many facets to their music and Standby covers ample ground. Dense and vibrant soundscapes flow effortlessly from electronica to live instrumentation, blending clipped chords with raging open chord guitars, and dance-rhythms with forceful rock drumming. "Eyes Turning Black" was described on Dave Navarro's blog as "Pink Floyd meets NIN," while Viktor Phoenix of BuzzBands.la says their sound "...reflects the influence of European electronic artists known for their songwriting and live shows--the likes of Depeche Mode, along with Him, Muse, IAMX and even Imogen Heap (November 5, 2009)." Chicks With Guns called the music the perfect marriage between live instrumentation and electronic atmospherics.

Even the band's name holds an interesting story, hinting at the many layers upon which the human experience rests. As The SFV News blog reported: "When asked about the concept behind the name and the band, Atchley explained that he originally wanted to set up a Web site forum where people could post those moments in their lives that made them not the same. He would then take their stories, write them into song lyrics and give them credit on the album (October 21, 2009)."

While that idea may be saved for the future, there's no doubt that this creative musical force has garnered well-founded praise. Once you hear this band, you will never be the same.
