It is ironic how fresh starts and new beginnings can derive from a return to something familiar. However, after an inconsistent year of trial and error that started with varied success and ended with a long layoff, Pittsburgh Metal-core/Electronica band , Said the Head is back with a new lineup, a new energy, and a new sound. Well, sort of.
With the departure of Jake Over (turntables, raps, electronic programming), founding members Jonathan Joseph (vocals and synths) and Ryan Custead (guitar and electronics) were left with an album’s worth of material, and a substantially compromised live performance. “Jake made it possible for us to exist in our original form. His talents are unique and in our eyes, irreplaceable,” said Jonathan Joseph about Over’s departure.
Rather than replace Over, the band decided to go in a completely different direction by enlisting long time friends and former band mates in Matt Goetz (Bass and Guitar) and Matt Barton (Drums). “We’ve been in bands together on and off since 6th grade. It is a familiar chemistry and atmosphere that really makes this transition an easy one,” responded Custead when asked about the new lineup.
Despite the changes, Said the Head is still playing most of the same songs that fans became familiar with from the beginning. Yet, live drums, bass, and second guitar extremely alter the feel and dynamics of the band’s live sound and stage presence in a much welcomed way. “We always knew we were missing something live. Everything is just bigger and fuller now.”
The recent release of their debut E.P. “Lost in Twilight” sets a benchmark for the past and marks the turning point for what is to come. “We are not afraid of our past. In fact, it is a big part of who we are. Yeah, our recordings may be different than what you’re going to hear live, but isn’t that more interesting anyway?”
The “Lost in Twilight” E.P. can be streamed for free at www.myspace.com/saidthehead and purchased on itunes or at any of , Said the Head’s live performances.
