“I’m stepping out, no turning round…” croons Joey Barnes in his song “The Wire (Act One)”. The native of Greensboro, NC released his solo debut EPs, Always and Last Request, through Nascent Republic Records earlier this year. On breaks from his “day job” of drumming for the award-winning band Daughtry, Joey has been meticulously writing and recording every chance he gets.

Joey co-wrote the final track on Daughtry’s sophomore album, Leave This Town, and the song “Call Your Name” is getting excellent reviews. The album debuted at #1 on the Billboard Charts. His solo music is also getting recognition, and The Emory Autism Center requested one of his songs be a part of a compilation disc they’re putting together as a fundraiser. The CD, featuring “The Wire (Act One)” will be available digitally on August 24, 2009. No stranger to charity causes, Joey is also donating two songs he wrote after visiting Africa with the ONE campaign last year to an organization called Planetwize, where all the proceeds will go to benefiting NextAid.

Watching Joey perform onstage makes one realize the difference between a regular musician and a true artist. The passion he emits while playing makes you appreciate the honesty behind every note. “And honesty,” Joey maintains, “be it pretty or brutal, is something that’s contagious. People dig that.” He concedes that he has no problem getting onstage and “bleeding for hours” during a performance. It’s this type of rare quality that sets Joey apart from the majority of the music industry today. His humble confidence and desire to stay true to himself as opposed to what’s popular with the mainstream is going to give him the longevity to stay in the spotlight as long as he desires.
