Bransen

Overview: "In the spring of 2007, members of the indie-punk number Hammerleaf decided to pursue a new musical project. It would attempt to combine the written word with progressive rock music, to join stories with songs. 'We're not talking about a Wizard of Oz - Dark Side of the Moon kind of thing," explains guitarist Josh Mayo, "the songs and stories are meant to play off of each other, not really to be experienced simultaneously.' Frontman Kevin Whelan explains that their merging of distinct but complementary art forms is 'admittedly not unique;' 16th and 17th century composers of "program music" attempted to evoke extra-musical ideas in their work - Baroque compositions written alongside poetry, and piano studies coupled with prose. Dissatisfied with their previous endeavors' limited depth, and restless to explore new musical soundscapes, the collective began to experiment with "prose-rock" under the name Bransen."
